Home Air Quality and Your Health: Do You Have the Facts?
Barb Cronin
By now we all pretty much know that the outside air (water, soil and practically everything else) is polluted and potentially dangerous for our health. But what do you know about your home air quality? Do you, like most people, assume it's safe? Think again.

The EPA reports that the air inside your own home may be ten times more polluted than the outside air, yes, that's ten times. Shocked?

The amount of time we spend in our homes (sleeping alone is probably close to 8 hours) makes it vital to have safe, healthy home air quality to protect your health as well as the health of your loved ones.   Children and seniors are especially susceptible to sickness from poor home air quality. Lung disease like asthma is on the rise, could the air in your house be a contributor?  According to the American Lung Association, 20.3 million Americans have asthma.

You've heard of sick buildings, right? Well your own home could be producing similar "sick" air. Soot, allergens and toxins continually emitted from electronics, furniture, carpets and even household cleaners could be causing your home air quality to be less than healthy.

Flu, cold, pneumonia and other respiratory sicknesses can be a result of poor home air quality. Radon, tobacco and other more toxic substances can lead to lung cancer and chronic asthma.

Learn about how you can detect your own home air quality with simple, inexpensive kits. Once you know if more about your home air quality you'll know if you need to do something to improve it. Take the time to know what's going on in your home and life and you'll be healthier and happier for it.
