Are Your Hair Care Products Making You Lose Your Hair?
Barb Cronin

Many of us use hair care products to enhance and transform our hair.  Women especially, tend to use more hair products than men.  Did you know that these products could be the cause of hair loss?

Gels, sprays, mousses, dyes and other products can cause damage to the hair, particularly the hair strand.  The results?  Unwanted, unsightly hair loss.

The 2 Most Common Hair Loss Culprits

Hair Dyes:

We want to change our natural color, get rid of grays, or just enhance our hair. Opting for dying the hair can result in hair loss.  Hair dyes are the leading products causing hair loss.  Harsh (often dangerous) chemicals used adversely effect the hair leading to excessive drying, splitting and eventual hair loss.

Perms:

Attempts to permanently curl the hair lead to hair loss too.  When the product is too strong, mixed improperly, applied incorrectly or left on for too long hair loss occurs.

Any product or styling tools (hair sprays, mousses, gels, etc.) used too often can lead to hair loss.  The chemicals build up on the hair strand (or in the case of using too much weigh it down) and the hair breaks, resulting in thin hair from hair loss.

What Can You Do to Reverse Hair Loss?

If you think that your hair loss may be a result of any of these culprits the first step is to stop using the product - immediately!  Next you want to repair the damaged hair.  This can be done by consulting with a professional and following their advice.

You can also shop around for organic, all natural products that will nurture the hair.  Deep cleaning products will remove the build up and moisturizing shampoos, conditioners and crèmes will help to restore your hair to health.

If you have a lot of damage, you may want to consider cutting some of your hair.  This will stop the breakage and allow healing of the less damaged hair.  Letting the hair strand become strong again and then avoiding certain detrimental products will help you regain a head of full, healthy hair.

Effective, Safe Hair Product Options

Still want to perm or color?  There are safe, effective options to achieve curly hair and colored hair that will give your hair a better shot at staying healthy.

Always look for hair dyes that are non-permanent or temporary.  Read the ingredients and opt for all natural, alcohol free products.  The organic section of many grocery stores and health food stores offer choices for hair dyes that are safe, all natural and effective.

For perms, think about hot rollers or gentler perm options like body waves.

Go All Natural!

In the course of healing your damaged hair and looking for softer, gentler products choose two days (at least) each week to go with out any product at all.  You'll let the hair breathe better and absorb needed nutrients too.

If you're used to using a lot of hair products this may seem daunting at first.  Give it a try and you just may discover a new hairstyle even better for you!
