Alopecia Areata Basics
Alopecia areata can strike anyone, even the healthiest person. Characterized by bald patches on the head, alopecia areata occurs without warning and is sometimes associated with autoimmune diseases. One fifth of those afflicted by alopecia areata have a family history, otherwise the cause is unknown.
In most cases the hair grows back on its own within a year’s time. This may not seem long but if you’re living with bald patches on your head, it may seem like a lifetime.

Onion Juice
It doesn’t sound appealing but living with bald patches isn’t appealing either. In a study published in the Journal of Dermatology participants in two groups used onion juice or tap water on their problemed (alopecia areata) hair. After applying the onion juice to the scalp daily improvements were noted for the group; in two weeks 73.9% saw hair growth; 4 weeks 86.9% reported significant hair growth. The group using only tap water had only 2 of 23 participants report hair growth after two months.
Essential Oils
Another study reported an increase in hair growth for participants using an essential oil blend. Thyme, rosemary, lavender and cedarwood blended with jojoba and grapeseed oil was massaged daily into the scalps of one group while the control group used only jojoba and grapeseed oils. In seven months the group using the essential oil blend noted a 44% improvement in hair condition, while the control group reported a 15% improvement.
Hypnosis
Many claim hypnosis to be effective in alopecia areata treatment. Drops in levels of stress and anxiety were noted accompanied by hair growth.
If you suffer from alopecia areata it can be embarrassing but take heed. Hair generally will regrow in a year’s time and in the meantime you can try one of these all natural and safe alternatives.
